It was a fantastic year 3 at the Iowa Irish Fest in downtown Waterloo - it's always so fun to see the entire city transformed and covered in Irish flags and the bands drive or fly in from so many different far-flung places for a full weekend of music, merry-making, food, craft and food vendors and of course - Guinness!
So many people came up and told us they'd been watching our videos for years, dozens of people told us how far they'd driven to come see a show - 4-5 hours, some from other states! We really need to get to the Midwest more often. But it was great to visit with fans after the shows, as well as at the VIP meet-and-greet on Saturday afternoon.
This fest is always a highlight for the bands as well, because we get to collaborate and jam with each other and catch up after months on the road to swap stories and tunes. It was especially fun to join up with our friends the multi-talented Fitzgeralds from Ontario, Canada, for some tunes and a shared set on Saturday night which went down a storm!
Next up; Michigan, then on to Ohio!
The Gothard Sisters and the Fitzgeralds onstage after the collaboration set as well as Dean Wipperman on guest bodhran, and Fritz McGirr (not pictured) also on bodhran.
Solana and Julie getting ready to jump onstage... meanwhile someone ate a lot of pizza and it wasn't us. (Just kidding - these pizza boxes were actually used for a beginner bodhran workshop earlier in the day - fun fact!)
Instruments and set lists backstage before our final show on Sunday afternoon.
With fans at the VIP Meet and Greet on Saturday
Backstage on a nearly perfect day - high 70's and scattered clouds. Such a great weekend for a festival!
And here is the road blog!
